Adelaide Hills and Wineries

When you’re tired of shopping, head for the hills. The Adelaide Hills, that is, located just 20 minutes from the city, and experience a splendid selection of wineries and eateries offering every culinary and gastronomic delight imaginable. You don’t even need to drive, buses from Adelaide service this area. Call the Passenger Transport Board on (08) 8210 1000 for bus information. If you do want to drive, take the South Eastern Freeway out of Adelaide towards Melbourne, and look out for the turn-off signposts to the Hills towns.

More than 40% of Australia’s wine is produced in this area, which deservedly has the reputation of being one of Australia’s better cool-climate wine regions, and specialises in sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay. Linger over a fine meal in one of the many restaurants, or grab a loaf and a bottle and have a picnic in the spectacular countryside. Here you can also find jazz in the pubs and good beer brewed locally.

For bushwalking enthusiasts the Hills provide a wonderful array of tracks through the Mt Lofty Ranges. Bushwalking clubs will guide you, or go it alone in one of the conservation parks. Views over Adelaide and the gulf are spectacular from Mt Lofty’s 710m summit. The Hills are usually a few degrees cooler than Adelaide, making walking in this area a very pleasant summer experience.

Wine production is not only an important part of SA’s economy, but has contributed greatly to its history and is of invaluable benefit to contemporary culture. The South Australian Wine Industry Association (through various name changes) has been in existence since 1840, supporting a strong and growing industry renowned for its fine produce. Coonawarra wines, for example, are world famous for their “character, elegance, strength, colour and richness of flavour”, which is attributed to the terra rossa (red earth) of the area.

Over 40% of Australia’s wines are produced in South Australia and, besides Coonawarra, other areas producing high quality wines are: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Riverland, Langhorne Creek and Padthaway.
